Well 5 airplanes and 12 people showed up to our fly-in to the Hacienda de los
Santos in Alamos, Mexico. We had planes from California, Nevada, Arizona,
and Mexico City meet at beautiful Alamos, Mexico in the state of Sonora and
stayed at the wonderful Hacienda de
los Santos.
Three airplanes took off together from Marana airport
in Tucson on Sunday morning and flew
in loose formation for the flight to Obregon to clear customs in Mexico and then
onto Alamos, short 20 minute flight. Despite an airmet for turbulence, the
ride was mostly smooth. Clearing customs was easy and fuel is cheaper in
Mexico. We paid $3.80 (really bad that we think that's a good price).
Thanks to Ozzie & Jo Kaufmann for putting us up at their mountain castle on top
of Mount K on Saturday night!
If you have not been to Mexico, or haven't been to Alamos, a stay at the
Hacienda de los Santos is a must. Jim Swickard (owner & pilot, and his
wife are fabulous hosts). The Hacienda consists of a walled estate with
25+ rooms surrounded by beautiful gardens, 3 pools, bars including a tequila bar
with 450 tequilas, a spa, and a partridge in a pear tree. Our planes were
hangared at no additional cost, and we were driven to the Hacienda by Jim and
presented with margaritas and salsa/guacamole and chips.
Jim made us official members of the Club Pilotos de Mexico, and presented us
with hats and all of the privileges of being a member. On the first
morning, Jim gave us all a walking tour of Alamos and on the 3rd day a driving
tour of the area. Jim and the Hacienda are both first class and we will
definitely plan another VMG fly-in here in the future.
