Well, the second attempt at Monument Valley (UT25) was a resounding success.
Eleven airplanes and 25 people showed up for the fantastic Monument Valley
Full Moon Tour. The weather cooperated this time with sunny warm
weather for arrivals and departures. We had about a 6 knot tailwind
landing and about a 5 knot tailwind departing. As you can see from the
pictures below, there is one way to land and the opposite way to depart, due
to a prominent sandstone monument. We moved the start of the tour from
7:30 to 8:30 to maximize our time under the Full Moon. Our Navajo
guide was entertaining and brought us to some pretty remote areas of
Monument Valley (See Below).
Here we are (below) hanging by the pool having a few sodas and beers
swapping stories!
Dinner at the Historic Gouldings Lodge with some great pilots and
passengers. Even a Cessna joined us for this great fly-in!
So the night sky was completely clear, winds calm and temperature suitable
for short sleeve shirts. Here are just a few pictures for this "Bucket
List" fly-in. Our Navajo guide brought us into remote sections of the
park, not available to the general public. At one stop, he sang a Navajo
song which only added to the spiritual nature of the place under Moonlight.
At a second place, he taught us all a Navajo dance. The eagles had to
wonder what those crazy Mooney pilots were doing at 10:30pm way out in
Monument Valley that evening!
Our guide had us all lay against the rock wall of this amazing natural
amphitheater. It was very deep and very high. As we laid back and
relaxed, looking up we saw a circular window at the top that the
Moonlight was seeping through. If you stared at the window, you
could actuall see a giant eagle. Lots of fun. Nature at its
best.
See you at the next fly-in!
